Modernism is best represented in color by the color grey. The color grey connotes depression and angst; many of the works of the modernist age pertain to the angst felt when trying to adjust to this new age. In addition, another key theme of modernism is autonomy and freedom; thus, the color grey can represent the depression felt by those who felt "trapped" by traditional values and ideas, unable to break free. As one further example, the color grey is in the middle between black and white; the modernist era can be seen as a transitional period from the archaic American past to the state of America which we are accustomed to today.

Arrows pointing forward symbolize modernism. Foremost, arrows represent progress; much of modernist literature concerns the social, technological, and other similar advances of the day. Adding on to this theme, the "forward" arrow represents change, and change is often met with backlash; connecting to modernism, many modernists wrote of the backlash they received from "the establishment" when trying to advance into the 20th century.

Modernism can be represented, as an image, by a horizon. This picture, in particular, best attests to this representation; the the grey sea represent a "sea of angst", per se; modernists often viewed life quite pessimistically. The clouds, too, can represent hopelessness and the darkness of the soul. The sun, however, represents the opposite; the sun connotes a bright future and hope for the future; modernists often had a strong want to escape the formalism of the Victorian era and enter a new age. Connecting to that theme of breaking free, the state of the sun in the picture, how it is visible among an onslaught of clouds, symbolizes resilience and rebellion, two integral themes of modernism.
